Analytical Center – Institute “Liberalis”
ESTABLISHMENT
In 2022, Lithuania adopted the draft Law on Political Organizations, which allows political parties operating in Lithuania to establish analytical centers (think tanks). In April 2023, the Liberal Movement established an analytical center – Institute “Liberalis”.
The mission of the Institute “Liberalis” is to promote and uphold the principles of liberalism, which we believe are essential to the vision of a just, prosperous, and free society.
WHAT WE BELIEVE IN AND WHAT WE OPPOSE
We present five positions that we believe represent our liberal views. We also present five positions that we consider illiberal, based on our commitment to individual freedoms, limited government intervention, and equal opportunities.
LIBERAL POSITIONS
Individual rights and freedoms: We firmly believe that individual rights and freedoms are the foundation of a liberal society. This includes freedom of speech, religion, self-expression, and association. We advocate for the protection of these rights, recognizing that they empower individuals to live independently and contribute to the diversity and vitality of our society.
Free market economy: We support a free market economy that allows individuals and businesses to compete in an open and competitive environment. We believe that economic freedom promotes innovation, efficiency, and prosperity. This improves the standard of living and quality of life for all members of society.
Rule of law and limited government: We emphasize the importance of the rule of law and the limited scope and power of government. We advocate transparent and accountable governance that respects the rights of citizens while ensuring the provision of all essential services, compliance with laws and order, and the protection of property rights.
Equality and non-discrimination: We firmly uphold the principle of equal opportunity and oppose any form of discrimination based on race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or other characteristics. We strive for a society in which everyone has the opportunity to realize their potential and contribute to the collective well-being.
Environmental protection and sustainability: We understand the importance of environmental protection and sustainable development. We advocate policies that balance economic growth with responsible management of natural resources, recognizing that a healthy environment is vital to the well-being of present and future generations.
NON-LIBERAL POSITIONS
Authoritarianism and suppression of dissent: We oppose any form of authoritarianism that suppresses dissent, restricts individual freedoms, and undermines the right to express diverse opinions. Illiberal attitudes that restrict freedom of speech and stifle criticism hinder social progress and threaten democratic principles.
Economic protectionism: We oppose economic protectionism and isolationist policies that restrict trade and hinder the free flow of goods and services between countries. Such measures can reduce consumer choice, lead to economic inefficiency, and hinder growth opportunities.
Excessive government regulation: We criticize excessive government regulation that stifles entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic growth. An overly regulated environment can discourage business, hinder competition and job creation, and ultimately impede social progress.
Discrimination and social exclusion: We oppose any form of discrimination that deprives individuals of their inherent rights and opportunities because of their characteristics. An illiberal stance that enables discrimination creates divisions in society and hinders the pursuit of social harmony and justice.
Erosion of privacy and civil liberties: We oppose any violation of privacy rights and civil liberties for reasons of personal security. An illiberal approach that interferes with personal privacy and freedom sets a dangerous precedent and violates the fundamental principles of a liberal society.
SUMMARY
The Institute “Liberalis” works to promote and encourage liberal thinking, which prioritizes individual rights, economic freedom, and equal opportunities. We oppose illiberal positions that restrict freedoms, limit economic growth, and justify discrimination. We firmly believe that these principles form the foundation of a just, prosperous, and inclusive society that benefits all its members.
